Questions fréquemment posées

Quelles vidéos ont des sous-titres disponibles pour l'extraction ?

Any public YouTube video with a caption track — whether manually uploaded by the creator or auto-generated by YouTube's speech recognition engine — can be extracted using WikiPlus YT Captions. Creators upload their own caption files for precise wording, professional translations, hearing-impaired compliance under broadcast regulations, or multilingual audience reach. YouTube auto-generates captions from the audio track for the majority of remaining public videos using its ASR pipeline, typically within one to six hours of the video going live. The CC badge visible on the YouTube player is a reliable indicator that a caption track exists and is accessible to this tool. YouTube's auto-caption system currently supports over fifteen languages, with the strongest accuracy on English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin. Videos where captions will not be available include purely musical content with no spoken dialogue, silent or ambient videos, videos whose audio YouTube's system could not process due to heavy background noise or distortion, and content where the creator explicitly disabled captions in YouTube Studio. Live streams are not captioned in real time through this tool — captions appear only after the stream ends and YouTube has fully processed the archived recording, which can take up to twenty-four hours for long broadcasts. If a video shows no CC option on YouTube's own player, this tool will return an empty result for the same reason: there is no caption track to fetch.

Les sous-titres auto-générés sont-ils assez précis pour être utilisés ?

Auto-generated captions are reliable enough for search indexing, rough transcription, research notes, and generating first-draft quotes — but they are not publication-ready without proofreading. YouTube's ASR engine achieves approximately 90 to 95 percent word-level accuracy on clear, single-speaker English audio recorded in a quiet environment. That sounds high, but on a ten-minute video it still means roughly 30 to 60 wrong words. Typical error patterns include homophone substitutions, for example 'there' instead of 'their', missing or misplaced punctuation throughout, brand names and proper nouns replaced with common dictionary words the model treats as phonetically similar, and speaker-attribution errors in multi-person recordings or interviews. Audio quality has the largest impact on accuracy: a studio microphone in a treated room versus a phone recording in a noisy café can shift accuracy from 95 percent down to 60 percent. Heavy accents, fast speech, technical jargon, and overlapping voices all reduce precision further. If your use case requires verbatim accuracy — legal depositions, medical documentation, closed-caption compliance filings, or journalistic quotes — treat the auto output as a structured first draft. Correct it while watching the video with captions displayed, using the timestamps to navigate quickly. For a five-minute clip this typically takes under ten minutes. Creator-uploaded captions are reviewed by a human and are generally accurate enough to publish directly.

Cet outil fonctionne-t-il avec les vidéos non répertoriées ou privées ?

No. WikiPlus YT Captions can only retrieve caption tracks from videos whose caption endpoint is publicly accessible without authentication. YouTube enforces access control at the server level: private videos require an authenticated session with the channel owner's credentials, and unlisted videos uploaded after 2021 have the same restriction applied to their caption endpoint even though the video link itself still works. This tool does not store cookies, OAuth tokens, or any YouTube login credentials — doing so would violate YouTube's Terms of Service and expose users to security risks. There is no workaround available through a standard browser request, and we do not attempt any form of bypass. If you own a private or unlisted video and need its caption file, the correct path is through YouTube Studio. Navigate to Content in the left sidebar, click on the video title, select the Subtitles tab, find the language track you want, click the three-dot overflow menu beside it, and choose Download. This exports the file in SBV or SRT format, which you can open in any text editor or subtitle application. For age-restricted videos that require sign-in to view, the same limitation applies regardless of caption availability. No cookies are read, stored, or transmitted during any WikiPlus session. All caption data retrieved by this tool comes exclusively from publicly accessible API endpoints that any browser could call directly without any credentials.

Puis-je exporter les sous-titres avec des horodatages ?

Yes. WikiPlus YT Captions offers two output formats that you can choose before downloading. The first is a plain text transcript with timestamps in square bracket notation at the start of each caption segment, formatted as [HH:MM:SS]. This format is easy to read, simple to search with Ctrl+F, and straightforward to paste into a Google Doc, Notion page, or word processor. It works well for research, quoting specific moments in a written review, or preparing chapter notes for a podcast. The second format is an SRT file, which is the industry-standard subtitle format used by virtually every professional video editing application. SRT output follows the exact specification: a sequential index number, a timing line using the arrow separator with hour-minute-second-millisecond precision formatted as HH:MM:SS,mmm --> HH:MM:SS,mmm, two lines of caption text, and a blank line between entries. Applications that natively import SRT include Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, CapCut, Kdenlive, Aegisub, and Subtitle Edit. No conversion or reformatting is needed. Timestamps in both output formats exactly match what YouTube displays on its own player, so re-importing an SRT into a video editor produces captions that stay perfectly synchronised with the original audio track. If you need WebVTT format for a web video player, rename the .srt file to .vtt and adjust the header line — the timing values are compatible with minor formatting differences.
